Hormel Foods has outlined five pizza trends for 2026, pointing to rising demand for heat, premium proteins and global flavours in the US market.
The company shared the update ahead of the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas, positioning the trends around its Hormel and Fontanini foodservice brands.
The trends include Calabrian chili-led spice, brisket as a premium topping, meat-heavy builds, globally inspired flavours and new crust formats.
Hormel said 43% of US consumers are actively looking to try new foods or flavours, with operators using limited-time offers more frequently to drive traffic.
The company also used the event to showcase new topping products, including Calabrian chili-based sausage and pepperoni variants.
What the trends show
The shift toward more specific heat reflects a move away from generic spice toward regional ingredients such as Calabrian chili.
Premium proteins are also gaining traction. Brisket is moving onto pizza menus as operators look to upgrade traditional barbecue profiles.
At the same time, “meat-forward” pizzas continue to expand, with multiple protein layers becoming a key part of menu positioning.
Global flavour combinations are also accelerating. Ingredients such as burrata, prosciutto and internationally inspired toppings are becoming more common, supported by strong growth in interest for global cuisines.
Crust innovation is emerging as a separate growth area, with sourdough, low-carb and alternative bases helping operators differentiate and increase value.
Why it matters
The Hormel pizza trends 2026 update highlights how protein-led innovation and global flavours are shaping product development across the US FMCG and foodservice market.
For suppliers, the focus on premium meats, regional spice profiles and rotating menu formats reflects a broader shift toward higher-value offerings.
For retail, these trends often move from foodservice into supermarket categories such as chilled pizza, ready meals and deli counters, influencing product ranges over time.
The emphasis on limited-time offers also signals how product rotation is becoming a core demand driver, not just a seasonal tactic.
Hormel is expected to continue expanding its pizza topping portfolio through 2026 as operators adopt new formats and flavour combinations across menus.
