The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for ravioli products made by Rana Meal Solutions after undeclared shellfish allergens were identified.
The alert relates to a chilled ready-meal line distributed through retail.
The affected product is 32-oz packs of “Giovanni Rana Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli.”
FSIS said the product may contain shrimp and lobster, despite being labelled as beef and burrata. Shellfish allergens were not declared on the packaging.
The items were produced between March 10 and April 21, 2026. Use-by dates range from May 14 to June 25, 2026.
Distribution was limited to Costco stores in Maryland and New Jersey.
The issue was identified after the company received two consumer complaints reporting that shrimp-filled ravioli had been placed in incorrect packaging.
No confirmed adverse reactions have been reported.
A recall was not requested because the product is no longer available for purchase. However, FSIS warned that some units may still be held by consumers.
Customers are advised not to consume the product and to either discard it or return it to the place of purchase.
Why it matters
This is a direct compliance issue for us fmcg supply chains.
Undeclared allergens remain one of the highest-risk categories in supermarket food safety. Even limited incidents can trigger tighter retailer audits and stricter supplier controls.
For chilled ready meals, where production lines handle multiple recipes, packaging accuracy is critical. Errors at this stage can quickly reach store shelves.
The case also underlines the role of consumer complaints as an early warning system in retail food safety.
FSIS is expected to continue monitoring, while the manufacturer reviews its production and labelling processes.
