Johnson Controls upgrades Metasys for supermarkets

-

Johnson Controls has introduced Metasys 16.0, the latest version of its building automation platform, adding new cybersecurity, redundancy and energy management features designed to improve operational resilience across commercial buildings, including supermarkets, distribution centres and other temperature-controlled facilities. The update was announced on 1 July 2026.

Building management systems play a critical role in modern grocery retail by controlling refrigeration, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and other essential building services. As retailers face rising energy costs, stricter sustainability requirements and increasing cybersecurity risks, investment in intelligent building infrastructure continues to grow.

Metasys 16.0 introduces native server redundancy that enables continuous system operation without requiring specialised hardware or third-party software. According to Johnson Controls, the platform also incorporates zero-trust security architecture, encrypted communications and compliance with IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2 standards to strengthen protection against cyber threats.

The company says the latest release can reduce engineering time by up to 30%, accelerate upgrades by up to 40% and speed system integration by as much as 80% through standardised workflows and low-code integration tools. These improvements are intended to simplify deployment while reducing operational disruption during upgrades.

Energy management is another major focus of the update. Metasys 16.0 includes built-in dashboards that allow building operators to monitor energy consumption, costs, emissions and demand from a single interface. The platform also supports automated reporting aligned with regulations including the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and several US energy performance standards.

For supermarket operators, the platform’s enhanced automation capabilities could help improve refrigeration efficiency, reduce energy consumption and support compliance with increasingly demanding sustainability reporting requirements. Retailers managing large store networks may also benefit from the platform’s ability to integrate multiple building systems while maintaining continuous visibility across operations. This reflects the wider shift toward US retail technology solutions that improve store performance while lowering operating costs.

Johnson Controls said Metasys now supports more than 54,000 installations worldwide. The company also states that buildings using its Energy Management suite can achieve energy savings of up to 30% through ASHRAE Guideline 36-aligned HVAC control strategies, while fault detection tools can reduce equipment diagnosis costs and improve maintenance efficiency.

As supermarkets continue investing in digital infrastructure, building automation platforms are becoming increasingly important for managing energy-intensive operations such as refrigeration, HVAC and food storage. The latest Metasys release reflects growing demand for resilient, connected and cyber-secure systems that support both operational efficiency and long-term sustainability across retail estates.
