Ahold Delhaize USA is investing in a new state-of-the-art distribution center in Burlington, North Carolina, as part of its long-term plan to strengthen its supply chain across the U.S. East Coast.
The $860 million facility will span more than 1 million square feet and serve as a key logistics hub for the company’s grocery brands, including Food Lion. The project falls under Ahold Delhaize’s “Growing Together” strategy, which focuses on sustainable growth, modern infrastructure, and supply chain efficiency.
According to the company, the new Burlington site will expand the reach of ADUSA Distribution and ADUSA Transportation, both core arms of Ahold Delhaize’s U.S. operations. Once operational, it will handle fresh and frozen grocery deliveries to Food Lion and other regional brands, supporting faster replenishment and greater inventory flexibility.
The investment also brings a strong local dimension. Ahold Delhaize USA has operated in North Carolina for more than six decades through Food Lion and its distribution network. The Burlington project is expected to create over 500 new jobs when it opens in 2029, further deepening the company’s roots in the state.
The company said the new facility will use advanced automation and digital systems to increase accuracy and speed within its logistics network. It joins three existing Ahold Delhaize USA distribution centers in Salisbury, Butner, and Dunn, North Carolina — together forming one of the largest grocery distribution footprints on the East Coast.
With more than 8,000 transport assets logging roughly 125 million miles a year, the ADUSA network supports continued sales growth across Ahold Delhaize USA’s brands. Food Lion alone has now recorded more than 50 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth, supported by investments like these that aim to secure product availability and efficiency at scale.
For Ahold Delhaize, the Burlington build is a long-term play in resilience — one that ties logistics innovation to customer service, sustainability, and growth across its U.S. grocery portfolio.
