ALDI Nord expansion Germany plan adds 20 stores in 2026

-

ALDI Nord will expand its store network in Germany in 2026 with plans to open up to 20 additional supermarkets while carrying out more than 140 development projects across its existing estate.

The retailer confirmed the expansion as part of a broader investment programme that includes new store construction, relocations, conversions, expansions and modernisation projects across the country.

The company also clarified that recent media reports suggesting store closures in its German region were inaccurate.

Store network development across Germany

ALDI Nord currently operates around 2,200 stores across western, northern and eastern Germany.

The company said its expansion strategy remains focused on strengthening its presence in urban areas and modernising existing locations to improve the overall shopping environment.

Major cities including Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen are among the areas where new projects and redevelopment initiatives are expected to take place during 2026.

Alongside new store openings, the programme includes upgrades to existing supermarkets through layout improvements, store extensions and relocations to new sites where necessary.

The company said these investments are intended to maintain a modern and attractive store network for customers while supporting long-term growth in the German grocery market.

Why it matters

The ALDI Nord expansion Germany strategy reflects the continued importance of discount supermarkets within the country’s grocery sector.

Germany remains one of the most competitive supermarket markets in Europe, with discount retailers playing a central role in food retail distribution.

Store development programmes of this scale also influence the wider retail supply chain, including logistics networks, store equipment suppliers and packaging suppliers that support supermarket operations.

As discounters continue modernising stores and expanding their urban presence, competition with other German supermarket operators is expected to remain strong across the coming years.
