EDEKA has started construction work on a new supermarket in Mansfeld as the retailer continues expanding and modernising its regional store network in Germany.
Preparatory work officially began on 19 May at Friedensallee 31a in Mansfeld. The project is being developed by EDEKA Minden-Hannover, which appointed KUTTER HTS GmbH from Helbra as the general contractor for the construction phase.
Initial works include major earthmoving activity, raising the site level, and installing underground infrastructure before above-ground construction begins later this year. The supermarket is scheduled to open around Easter 2027.
The future store will feature a modern supermarket layout with fresh-service counters for meat, sausage, and cheese, alongside a bakery positioned in the pre-checkout area.
Sustainability features are also part of the development plan. The building is expected to include a rooftop photovoltaic system, while electric vehicle charging stations will be installed in the customer parking area.
The project also signals additional retail employment activity in the region. EDEKA said recruitment for the new supermarket will begin at a later stage, with vacancies to be published through the company’s career platform.
The investment reflects a wider trend across the German supermarket sector, where major grocery operators continue upgrading store formats with energy-efficient systems, convenience-focused layouts, and integrated fresh food departments.
For suppliers, retail contractors, and grocery equipment providers, projects like the Mansfeld development continue to highlight ongoing infrastructure investment across the wider German supermarket sector.
