EDEKA starts major store expansion in Schönwalde-Glien

-

EDEKA has officially started construction work on a new EDEKA Center in Schönwalde-Glien, Germany, marking a major local supermarket investment project with a planned opening in autumn 2027.

The new store, operated by independent retailer Daniela Posselt, will be built at Berliner Allee 6–8 and will more than double the size of the existing market. The planned sales area will reach around 2,400 square metres, positioning the site as one of the largest food retail locations in the immediate area.

Construction follows the recent approval of the building permit. Demolition and site preparation work are already underway.

The expanded EDEKA Center will significantly increase the product assortment, with a strong focus on fresh food, regional sourcing and convenience-led store design. The new layout will include full-service counters for meat, sausage and cheese, alongside gourmet categories such as smoked fish, olives and prepared specialities.

A larger drugstore department is also planned, addressing a current supply gap in the local retail landscape. The operator confirmed that trained drugstore specialists will support in-store customer service.

Food-to-go and fresh meal options will be expanded as part of the new concept. This includes a sushi counter, ready-to-eat salads and convenience items, as well as a bakery with an integrated café and hot food lunch counter. Seating capacity is expected to reach between 50 and 60 places across indoor and outdoor areas.

Checkout capacity will increase through a hybrid format. The store will operate five traditional checkout lanes alongside six self-checkout terminals, designed to improve customer flow during peak shopping hours.

Employment growth is also expected. The new supermarket is forecast to create between 60 and 80 jobs once fully operational.

Outside the store, the wider site will be completely restructured. Plans include at least 170 parking spaces, electric vehicle charging points and dedicated bicycle and cargo bike parking. The mobility concept is designed to support customers travelling via the nearby Havelland Cycle Path.

Construction will take place in three phases. The first stage involves demolition of a former carpentry workshop on site. The second phase will see the new supermarket building completed. The existing store will then be demolished to allow expansion of parking infrastructure. A temporary store closure is expected during the final phase, with the operator aiming to minimise disruption.

Why It matters

The project reflects continued investment by German supermarket operators in larger-format neighbourhood stores that combine fresh food, convenience services and in-store dining. For EDEKA’s independent retail network, the Schönwalde-Glien expansion highlights how local operators are upgrading legacy locations to compete with modern discounter formats and foodservice-led retail concepts.

It also reinforces the growing role of regional supermarket hubs that integrate food retail, mobility infrastructure and community services in suburban markets.
