EDEKA German Sustainability Award

-

EDEKA has already received a German Sustainability Award in the food retail category, which proves its pioneering position in environmental responsibility in the supermarket industry.

Award Of Retail Leadership

The award demonstrates the activity of EDEKA in minimizing its ecological footprint and bringing sustainable change to supply chains. The activities undertaken by the retailer are organizing an increase in its organic products, greenhouse gas emissions, and creating biodiversity and freshwater conservation programs.

EDEKA has collaborated with WWF since 2009 and sought to deal with the effects of its own actions on the environment across the value chains of its own private label products. It is a partnership that incorporates more sustainable production of bananas in four countries and its products have since entered the entry-level prices under the GUT&GUNSTIG brand.

Long-Term Sustainability Goals

In 2022, EDEKA became the first German food retailer, and the first net-zero goals scientifically verified, having registered in the Science Based Targets initiative. By 2045, the company intends to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent in its operations and supply chain.

EDEKA is expanding its vegetable product line, too, and enhancing its relationship with associations of German organic farmers to promote green consumption.

Industry Context

The German Sustainability Award has been in existence since 18 years and is among the most important awards in the country that companies promoting sustainable practices recognize. The selection of the winners is made by a multi-step procedure of conducting research, scoring, and reviewing by industry and civil society professionals.

The award will be given in Dusseldorf on December 5, 2025.

EDEKA German Sustainability Award marks a milestone for the retailer, positioning it as a frontrunner in sustainable supermarket operations in Germany.
