Huhtamaki Raises Climate Targets With SBTi Approval

-

Huhtamaki has strengthened its climate commitments after the Science Based Targets initiative approved the company’s updated greenhouse gas reduction targets. The packaging supplier announced the new targets on January 16 as part of its broader sustainability strategy.

The company now aims to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by more than 50% by 2030 compared to 2022 levels. Huhtamaki has also committed to cutting Scope 3 emissions by 25% over the same period.

In addition to the near-term targets, Huhtamaki confirmed it will set long-term climate targets aligned with reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

The updated targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and apply across Huhtamaki’s global operations and supply chain.

Huhtamaki said its climate action plan includes replacing fossil fuels, increasing the use of renewable energy, improving operational efficiency, and working more closely with lower-emission suppliers. The company is also focusing on increasing renewable and recycled content across its packaging portfolio.

The packaging group updated its wider sustainability ambitions in late 2025, strengthening internal accountability and aligning its targets more closely with customer and regulatory requirements across the packaging sector.

Beyond emissions, Huhtamaki continues to focus on developing packaging designed for recycling, composting, and reuse, while reducing waste and water consumption across production sites.

What Happens Next

Huhtamaki will begin implementing its updated climate action plan across operations and supplier networks. Progress toward the 2030 targets will be monitored as part of the company’s ongoing sustainability reporting cycle.
