Metro Frozen Distribution Update 2025

-

METRO Inc. has given an update on its Toronto frozen food distribution centre, one month after operations were interrupted by a mechanical failure.

The issue began on September 12, when a problem in the refrigeration system forced the site to stop handling frozen goods.

In a statement, METRO said repairs are moving ahead and should be finished “in the coming weeks.” Once completed, the site will reopen gradually.

The company has been using its contingency plan to keep stores supplied. All Metro and Food Basics locations in Ontario remain stocked and operating normally.

METRO said the incident will cost an estimated $22 million after tax in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, mostly from inventory losses and direct expenses.
Additional one-time costs will follow in early 2026, not counting any insurance recoveries.

The company thanked its teams and partners for maintaining service while repairs continue. METRO plans to release another update when it reports Q4 results on November 19, 2025.

With annual sales over $21 billion, METRO operates 995 food stores under banners including Metro, Metro Plus, Super C, Food Basics, Adonis, and Première Moisson, and employs more than 97,000 people in Canada.
