Nestlé and First Milk Launch Young Dairy Leaders

-

Nestlé and First Milk have launched a new initiative aimed at supporting the next generation of dairy farmers in the UK as the sector faces growing economic and sustainability pressures.

The programme, called Young Dairy Leaders, was launched on 19 May 2026 and has been developed with 8point9 Training and Education. The initiative focuses on practical learning designed to reflect the realities of managing a modern dairy business.

The companies said the programme responds to a lack of learning opportunities tailored to how younger farmers work and make decisions in day-to-day operations.

The launch event took place at Dovenby Hall in Cumbria, home to motorsports company M-Sport UK. Participants explored how businesses outside agriculture manage uncertainty, leadership challenges, and operational pressure.

Sessions during the event covered stress management, resilience, leadership, and long-term business development. The programme also included discussions with dairy farmer Robert Craig and adventurer Alex Staniforth.

Nestlé said the initiative forms part of its wider efforts to support long-term resilience across its dairy supply chain, including regenerative farming development and farmer sustainability.

First Milk said Young Dairy Leaders is intended to help younger farmers strengthen both business performance and personal confidence while building stronger community connections within the dairy sector.

The programme will continue with a series of events throughout 2026 for First Milk members interested in regenerative farming and long-term business resilience.

Why it matters

The UK dairy sector continues facing pressure from rising operational costs, labor challenges, sustainability requirements, and succession concerns across farming communities.

Large food manufacturers and retailers are increasingly investing in supply-chain resilience programmes to help secure long-term milk production capacity and support regenerative agriculture targets.

Initiatives like Young Dairy Leaders are becoming more important as the wider UK dairy and UK FMCG sectors focus more heavily on sustainable sourcing, farmer retention, and future food security.
