Tesco has declared a major progress in its local sourcing policy. It wishes to have 100 % Scotch beef and 100 % Scottish-sourced fresh salmon in all Scottish stores by the Spring of 2026. This step is based on good growth in the sales of Scottish produce and it also shows long term investment of Tesco in local farmers and suppliers.
In the last one year, Tesco has added 23 % of Scotch beef to its volume. This increase in sourcing translates to a projected economic boost of the Scottish economy to the tune of 30 million. The company is currently intending to go even larger with this by hoping to have all fresh beef on sale in its stores in Scotland, packaged, sourced, and reared in Scotland.
The Tesco Finest Scottish Salmon range recorded an impressive growth of 44 % in its volumes in 2024. The new sourcing strategy will go further to ensure that all fresh salmon in the Scottish stores are 100 % sourced locally in Scotland.
Boosting Local Agriculture and Rural Jobs
Tesco investment does not end in provision of products. The company operates Sustainable Farming Groups in their supply chains such as the Sustainable Beef Group that consists of more than 800 members. Among these, 59 are found in Scotland and assist in providing Tesco Finest beef range throughout the UK.
Such collectives assist farmers by providing them with long-term agreements, clear prices, and the possibility of using new solutions to minimize emissions and preserve nature. The information exchange between the farmers, suppliers, and the Tesco teams is to enhance animal welfare, as well as, establish a better farming future.
Tesco also deals with close to 200 local suppliers in Scotland and its operations also helps in supporting close to 50,000 jobs directly and indirectly in Scotland.
The scheme with 100 % Scotch beef and Scottish salmon is an initiative affiliated to the larger strategy of Tesco securing its presence in the rural neighborhoods. The firm is still in the process of reminding people about the quality of Scottish food and beverages, most recently by attending Royal Highland Show, where it was promoting products of local Scottish suppliers and farmers.
The Scottish sourcing promise of Tesco demonstrates the local quality and economic and sustainability perspective of the company to be able to perform the transition by the Spring of 2026.
