Thai Union to Shift Mackerel Sourcing for Sustainability

-

BANGKOK, 15 October 2025 — Thai Union Group said it will change where it sources its mackerel to protect the Atlantic fish stocks that are now under pressure.

From 2026, the company will focus more on Scomber colias, a mackerel species that is more common and considered sustainable. This change is part of Thai Union’s SeaChange 2030 plan, which aims to make its seafood supply safer for the ocean and future harvests.

The move follows advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas, which warned that catches of Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) must be reduced to stop further damage to the population.

Thai Union said it wants to act early, not wait for regulation. The company is also a member of the North Atlantic Pelagics Advocacy Group, a business group asking coastal nations to set fishing quotas that follow science, not politics.

The plan ties closely to Thai Union’s wider sustainability work. Earlier this year, the company passed its 2025 Blue Finance goal by raising more than THB 24 billion through green and sustainability-linked funding.
