EDEKA Hemelingen Groundbreaking Marks Major Retail Expansion

-

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new EDEKA Center Hemelingen has taken place on the site of the former confectionery factory in Bremen. The supermarket project is planned to be launched at the close of 2026, which will anchor the ambitious redevelopment of the large-scale redevelopment of the “Alte Susswarenfabrik” quarter.

Construction and Retail plans

The new store will be run by EDEKA Minden-Hannover and will be located on approximately 4,500 square meters of retail space. The venue will have a large fresh produce space and meat, sausage, cheese, fish, and baked goods service counters. The architectural style also incorporates a shopping space along with a cafe, seats and a drug store.

The location under construction is highly sustainable. It has plans to have photovoltaic roof systems, supply of green electricity, and heat providing recovery on refrigeration units. The heating system and core activation will be based on a heat pump system and a concrete core to ensure control of temperature. EV charging stations, cargo bike parking and over 140 new trees are also part of the project.

Associated with Urban Redevelopment

The EDEKA Center Hemelingen is part of a broader redevelopment project led by real estate company Justus Grosse. The southern section of the area will be a new residential and mixed-use quarter with a number of several hundred apartments, restaurants, services, and cultural facilities.

Timeline

The retail site is going to be constructed instantly, and the shell is anticipated to be finished by spring 2026. Interior work is scheduled to follow, with the EDEKA Center Hemelingen opening targeted for late 2026.

The new full-range supermarket will make the district stronger as it provides the modern shopping experience and sustainable design characteristics.
