Schwarz Group Acquires Romanian Retailer La Cocoș

-

German retail group Schwarz Group has acquired a majority stake in Romanian retailer La Cocoș following approval from Romania’s competition authority, strengthening its presence in the country’s grocery market.

The deal brings the fast-growing hypercash retailer into the Schwarz Group portfolio and supports further expansion of the concept across Romania and potentially other European markets.

Schwarz expands retail footprint in Romania

La Cocoș operates a hypercash retail format designed around large sales areas and a focused assortment of around 12,000 products.

The concept aims to reduce operational costs through functional product presentation and simplified store operations. These savings are then passed on to customers through lower retail prices.

The model targets both private households and small businesses looking to purchase groceries in larger quantities.

The retailer also applies quantity-based discounts, offering progressively lower prices as customers buy higher volumes.

With the acquisition completed, La Cocoș will continue operating as an independent company within Schwarz Group.

Current management will remain in place, and store employees will continue their roles as the company expands.

Expansion plans across Romania

The partnership is expected to accelerate store development across Romania, with additional locations planned before the end of the year.

New stores will create jobs across retail operations, administration, and supply networks, while also increasing demand for local suppliers and service providers.

Schwarz Group plans to invest in the retailer’s expansion, aiming to strengthen its position in Romania’s competitive grocery sector.

Beyond domestic growth, the companies also see potential to introduce the hypercash concept in other European markets.

The model combines elements of discount retail, wholesale purchasing, and hypermarket-scale operations, creating a format designed for cost-efficient grocery distribution.

Why it matters

Romania has become one of the fastest-growing grocery retail markets in Central and Eastern Europe, attracting increased investment from major international retail groups.

Through this acquisition, Schwarz Group expands its footprint in a market where its existing chains, including Lidl and Kaufland, already operate.

The hypercash retail model could also influence price competition and grocery distribution across the region if it expands successfully beyond Romania.

Future store openings and potential international rollout will determine how widely the concept develops within the European grocery sector.
