SPAR Portugal Logistics Warehouse Opens in Santarém

-

SPAR Portugal has expanded its logistics network with the launch of a new distribution warehouse in Santarém, strengthening the retailer’s supply chain infrastructure across the country.

The new SPAR Portugal logistics warehouse is located at Panattoni Park Santarém, close to the main highway corridor connecting Lisbon and Porto. The facility will support the distribution of goods to SPAR partners and stores across Portugal while consolidating inventory operations in one central location.

SPAR Portugal secured 17,902 square metres of space within the modern logistics complex, which has a total warehouse area of around 33,000 square metres.

In addition to storage capacity, the site includes 1,344 square metres of office space and a 1,119 square metre mezzanine designed to support administrative activities and day-to-day operational management.

The facility is equipped to handle large-scale logistics activity. It offers 48 loading and unloading bays, a 35-metre manoeuvring area for trucks, a clearance height of 10.6 metres, and 1,250kW of electrical capacity across the complex.

With the opening of the new SPAR Portugal logistics warehouse, the company says its consolidated storage capacity has more than doubled, allowing the retailer to improve supply responsiveness and operational efficiency across its network.

Fernando Pereira, CEO of SPAR Portugal, said the new site represents an important step for the company’s development in the country.

He noted that the Panattoni Park Santarém facility provides the conditions needed to significantly improve logistics performance while strengthening relationships with partners and stakeholders.

The investment highlights the increasing importance of logistics infrastructure in the modern Portugal supermarket sector, where retailers are expanding distribution capabilities to support growing store networks and more efficient product supply.

SPAR stores in Portugal operate largely as neighbourhood convenience outlets run by independent retailers under sub-licensing agreements, alongside company-owned locations.

The licence for the SPAR brand in Portugal was originally granted to a local retailer in 2006, while new investors entered the business in 2011 to support the company’s expansion and growing operational requirements.

The Santarém warehouse is expected to play a central role in supporting SPAR Portugal’s continued growth and improving supply chain efficiency for stores throughout the country.

Why it matters

Efficient logistics infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for grocery retailers as supply chains grow more complex and store networks expand.

By centralising inventory and expanding storage capacity, the SPAR Portugal logistics warehouse allows the retailer to improve product availability, shorten delivery times and strengthen supply coordination with its network of independent store operators.

Investments in distribution hubs like Santarém are therefore a key part of modern supermarket operations, helping retailers maintain reliable food supply while supporting growth in the competitive Portuguese grocery market.
