Migros is strengthening its supermarket network in Bern with a mix of new openings and store refurbishments across the city.
The retailer has already opened a new small-format sales area at Bubenbergplatz, designed for immediate consumption. The site offers a compact range focused on quick meals and convenience for commuters, workers and visitors in the station area.
The new location adds to Migros’ existing presence near the main station and is expected to benefit further once the new RBS railway station is completed, improving direct access.
A refurbishment of the Migros Christoffel store is scheduled for this summer. The branch will close for seven weeks from 12 June and reopen on 30 July following a full upgrade using the company’s “Papillon” store design.
Further expansion is planned in the city centre. A new supermarket at Bärenplatz 8 is set to open by the end of next year, subject to a full building renovation. The site will operate across two floors and is expected to support customer demand in central Bern.
Migros also confirmed longer-term plans to modernise its Marktgasse location. Construction will be carried out in phases to allow parts of the store to remain open throughout the works.
Beyond Bern, the retailer said additional openings and refurbishments are planned across the Migros Aare cooperative region in the coming years.
Why It Matters
Migros is increasing its focus on urban convenience and modern store formats.
The smaller Bubenbergplatz concept reflects growing demand for fast, ready-to-eat options in high-traffic city locations.
At the same time, continued investment in refurbishments and new large-format stores shows the retailer is balancing convenience with full-range supermarket coverage.
This dual strategy is becoming standard across European grocery markets, where retailers are upgrading legacy stores while adding flexible formats closer to transport hubs.
