FSIS Retracts Lead Alert on Walmart Dino Nuggets

-

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has retracted its April 1 public health alert on Walmart Great Value Dino Shaped Chicken Nuggets. Follow-up testing found no elevated lead levels in the product.

The original alert was issued after routine sampling by the New York State Department of Public Health suggested trace lead in the frozen, ready-to-eat chicken nuggets. Because the product is popular with children, FSIS warned consumers of a potential health risk.

Subsequent testing by Dorada Foods, the producing company, and New York authorities confirmed the initial result was a false positive caused by sporadic laboratory contamination. No product tested—including the original lot—showed elevated lead levels.

FSIS reviewed the lab data in coordination with the New York State Department of Health and concluded the product poses no public health concern. Consumers can safely continue purchasing the nuggets.

Why it matters

Food safety alerts can affect consumer confidence and retail sales, even when later retracted. For grocery retailers, quick communication and follow-up testing are critical to managing potential reputational risks.
