REWE Opens First ZooRoyal Pet Store in North Rhine-Westphalia

REWE Group has expanded its specialist pet retail business with the opening of its first ZooRoyal pet store in North Rhine-Westphalia, marking another step in the retailer’s nationwide rollout of the omnichannel brand.

The new store opened on 16 July at In den Diken 10, Düsseldorf, becoming ZooRoyal’s fifth standalone location in Germany. Until now, the brand had operated four stores in northern Germany.

Covering more than 1,400 square metres, the new outlet offers over 15,000 products for dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, horses and small animals. The assortment includes pet food, accessories, health products and ZooRoyal’s exclusive own-brand ranges.

A key feature of the store is a dedicated 200-square-metre animal health zone, offering products focused on joint care, digestion, skin and coat health, immunity and dental care. REWE also confirmed that a Medivet veterinary practice is scheduled to open within the store in 2027, further expanding the site’s healthcare offering.

The retailer has designed the location as an experience-led destination rather than a traditional pet store. Alongside its retail assortment, customers can access services including a dog grooming spa, dog wash station, self-service laundry for pet bedding, unpackaged pet treat bars, a pet photo booth and an engraving station.

The Düsseldorf location is operated by independent REWE retailer Simon Bacher, who already manages a REWE supermarket in Haan and is preparing to take over another store in Düsseldorf.

ZooRoyal Managing Director Marcel Bersch said the new store combines specialist products, expert advice and services designed to improve the shopping experience for both pet owners and their animals.

The opening also marks ZooRoyal’s entry into one of Germany’s largest regional pet markets. REWE said North Rhine-Westphalia has a significant population of pet owners, making it an important region for the continued development of the specialist retail format.

ZooRoyal has been part of the REWE Group since 2014 and operates as an omnichannel pet retailer through its online platform and physical stores. Its products are also sold through REWE, PENNY, toom, BILLA and BIPA.

REWE said the Düsseldorf opening forms part of a broader expansion strategy, with additional ZooRoyal stores already planned during 2026, 2027 and the following years. The next location is expected to open in Osnabrück.

As supermarket groups continue expanding beyond traditional grocery categories, specialist pet retail has become an increasingly attractive growth segment. REWE’s continued investment in ZooRoyal reflects growing consumer demand for premium pet food, healthcare products and service-led shopping experiences within the wider retail market.
