EDEKA expands MAX BALANCE range as Germany’s protein trend accelerates

-

Hamburg, April 20, 2026 — German retailer EDEKA is expanding its sports nutrition private label MAX BALANCE, adding new protein powders, bars, drinks, and functional supplements as demand for high-protein diets continues to rise across the country.

The rollout comes as consumer interest in protein-rich diets strengthens in Germany, particularly among people combining fitness routines with everyday nutrition choices. Recent surveys cited by the company indicate that 61.6% of consumers now actively focus on higher protein intake in their daily diet, a shift that continues to influence supermarket product development.

The updated MAX BALANCE range is designed to cover both training-focused and everyday consumption needs. It includes protein powders, functional beverages, ready-to-drink meals, and snack bars, positioned as convenient options for consumers with active lifestyles.

Products in the range include whey and plant-based protein powders in flavours such as iced coffee, vanilla, and green apple. The line also features vegan options built from blends of soy, pea, and rice protein, alongside clear protein formats targeting lighter consumption preferences.

EDEKA is also introducing collagen-based supplements under the same brand, aimed at wellness-focused consumers, combining collagen hydrolysate with added vitamins and minerals.

The bar segment includes high-protein snack formats such as cookie and chocolate variants, designed for on-the-go consumption after training or during the day. Ready-to-drink products, including meal replacement shakes and functional drinks, extend the range beyond traditional sports nutrition.

According to EDEKA, the updated packaging design uses a black tile visual identity to unify the range across categories, while positioning the products more clearly within the functional nutrition space.

The retailer also highlights sourcing elements across parts of the range, including certified raw materials such as Rainforest Alliance certified coffee beans used in selected products.

Distribution of the expanded MAX BALANCE range will gradually roll out across EDEKA stores in Germany, strengthening its presence in the growing functional and sports nutrition category.

As competition intensifies across private label health and wellness products, the move reflects how supermarkets are increasingly building dedicated nutrition brands to capture long-term demand rather than short-term fitness trends.

The expansion also signals how high-protein retail products are becoming a permanent fixture in mainstream grocery assortments, moving further into everyday consumption rather than niche sports retail.
