Marubeni Inks Landmark Green Ammonia Offtake Agreement with Envision Energy in Inner Mongolia

-

In a major development in the global clean energy market, Marubeni Corporation has signed a long-term green ammonia agreement with Envision Energy Co., Ltd., a leading renewable technology company. The deal secures Marubeni’s access to green ammonia produced with renewable wind power in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, China.

The green ammonia agreement marks Marubeni’s first such deal and signals its intent to become a significant supplier of carbon-free industrial materials. Envision’s new facility will begin trial production in 2024, with full commercial output scheduled for late 2025. With an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons, it will be the world’s first large-scale green ammonia production plant.

Historic Green Ammonia Agreement Supports Decarbonization Goals

Unlike conventional ammonia, green ammonia is produced using hydrogen derived from water electrolysis powered by renewable energy—emitting no carbon dioxide in the process. This clean fuel is increasingly seen as a viable alternative for decarbonizing industries such as:

  • Fertilizer and chemical manufacturing

  • Shipping and maritime fuels

  • Power generation and hydrogen transport

“This green ammonia agreement is a major milestone for the Marubeni Group,” the company said in a statement. “It reflects our strategy to lead in sustainable supply chains and support the transition to a decarbonized society.”

Inner Mongolia To Host First Industrial-Scale Green Ammonia Plant

Envision’s plant in Inner Mongolia will use local wind energy to power its green hydrogen production. The ammonia generated will be shipped globally, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels and expand clean fuel adoption in Asia and beyond.

The location in Chifeng City offers:

  • Strong and consistent wind resources

  • Strategic proximity to industrial transport hubs

  • Access to growing regional demand for green energy

With this project, Envision continues to scale its green energy portfolio, and Marubeni gains early-mover advantage in a sector expected to grow exponentially over the next decade.

Marubeni Positions Itself as a Key Global Supplier

By entering this green ammonia agreement, Marubeni is not only locking in a long-term supply of sustainable fuel but also reinforcing its broader ESG and decarbonization objectives.

The company is exploring the use of green ammonia in:

  • Clean energy systems

  • Circular agriculture supply chains

  • Hydrogen carrier logistics

Marubeni aims to build a flexible supply network to meet demand from utilities, manufacturers, and logistics providers looking to decarbonize their operations.

Why Green Ammonia Matters for the Energy Transition

The value of green ammonia lies in its versatility and zero-emission credentials. Unlike many clean fuels, it can be stored and transported more easily—making it ideal for global energy distribution.

Key advantages include:

  • Carbon-free production process

  • Compatibility with existing ammonia infrastructure

  • Potential as a hydrogen carrier and combustion fuel

These attributes make green ammonia a cornerstone in future energy systems, particularly for countries with net-zero targets.
