DS Smith Experience Room Opens in Romania

-

DS Smith has opened a new recycling education and sustainability space in Ștefăneștii de Jos as part of its wider circular economy strategy in Romania.

The new DS Smith Experience Room was inaugurated at the company’s Recycling Depot in Ștefăneștii de Jos on 4 June 2026. The interactive space was designed for pupils and university students to learn how recycling systems work through multimedia tools and recyclable cardboard structures.

The project is focused on improving awareness around recycling, packaging waste, and circularity. DS Smith said the initiative is intended to help younger generations better understand the environmental impact of everyday actions.

The inauguration event included a live demonstration of the educational activities planned for schools and universities. Students from the Cambridge School of Bucharest attended the opening because of their involvement in environmental initiatives.

Representatives from the UK Embassy and Romania’s Ministry of Environment also attended the event alongside DS Smith executives from its Recycling and Paper divisions.

Why it matters

Packaging companies are increasing investments in recycling infrastructure and public education as retailers and FMCG brands face growing pressure to reduce packaging waste and improve circularity targets.

The new DS Smith Experience Room shows how packaging suppliers are moving beyond manufacturing and collection systems into consumer awareness and sustainability education.

For supermarkets and FMCG suppliers, recycling rates and packaging recovery systems are becoming more important across Europe as governments tighten environmental regulations and retailers expand sustainable packaging goals.

Romania is also becoming a growing operational market for DS Smith. The company currently operates recycling depots, packaging plants, service centres, and a paper mill across the country, employing around 650 people.

Schools, universities, and educational groups can register for free guided tours through the DS Smith website.

The DS Smith Experience Room is the first project of its kind launched at group level by the company and forms part of wider efforts to strengthen recycling engagement and circular economy awareness in Romania.
