Huhtamaki and Hesburger Expand Fiber Lid Partnership

-

Huhtamaki is expanding its partnership with Hesburger through the launch of new fiber beverage lids designed for both hot and cold drinks.

The customized lids were developed jointly by the two companies as part of a wider push toward lower-plastic foodservice packaging solutions across the European quick-service restaurant sector.

The new lids are made from renewable plant-based fibers and are produced at Huhtamaki’s foodservice manufacturing site in Alf, Germany.

According to the companies, the lids were designed to support everyday beverage use while improving sustainability performance. The fiber lids are compostable, recyclable, and contain no plastic coatings.

The transition from plastic lids to fiber alternatives is expected to help Hesburger reduce around 41,000 kilograms of plastic use annually.

Huhtamaki said the development process focused on usability for both hot and cold beverages while maintaining drinking comfort and product functionality.

The project also reflects growing pressure across the European foodservice and packaging sector to reduce single-use plastic dependency as retailers, restaurant operators, and packaging suppliers continue investing in fiber-based alternatives.

Fiber lids and molded fiber foodservice packaging have become a major focus area for packaging manufacturers as European sustainability regulations and retailer requirements continue tightening.

For supermarket suppliers and foodservice operators, the shift also highlights how packaging innovation is increasingly connected to wider Europe packaging and europe fmcg sustainability strategies.

Huhtamaki has continued expanding its fiber packaging portfolio in recent years as demand grows for recyclable and compostable foodservice solutions across restaurant and takeaway markets.

The collaboration with Hesburger shows how restaurant chains are now moving beyond pilot programs toward larger operational packaging transitions designed for everyday commercial use.
